Leading teams – online is not the same?

August 25th, 2006

A wonderful quotation by Peter Drucker has really meant food for thought…

Listen to Drucker’s words (my voice!) audioplayer

I wonder whether this “we-attitude” can be learnt, and to what extent the leader also depends on how team members perceive their role (the leader’s as well as their own I mean). I feel I’ve learned to become an effective leader online (and I guess that’s part of the explanation for the steady growth of LearningwithComputers), and keep wondering why I failed to make this a reality when I had the chance to try f2f team management, back in 1996… Is it age has turned me wiser? :-p … Or are there essential differences between f2f and online team coordination?

NOTE: I tried to embed a posting at Podomatic here, and failed… Therefore I’m trying inserting a link to my recording there… hope it works!

Inserting audio into a posting: It worked! However, it takes 3 clicks to get to my file, and after listening to it, my readers will need to click back to get to the entry, or might get lost, and end up commenting at Podomatic… I’d like to get people to get it in just one click, and then get back here, as I’ve seen it can be done at Blogger… Will keep experimenting until I find a satisfactory way!

I got this to work, Gladys! Fun to hear your voice!

A quote worth remembering, as well.

    Hi Gladys–
Nice job. Is the problem that edublogs doesn’t accept embedded files of this type? I think Blogger does it only in the template, not in posts, such this isn’t an unusual case.
    Keep up the great work!

Thanks Doug and Elizabeth for your supportive comments! It’s great to feel “listened to”, you know… :)
…As regards the content of my message, do you believe online facilitation is quite different from f2f? Or do facilitators from one environment tend to do well in the other?

Shucks. I could not get the audio recording to work – Maybe if you posted a url where the voice could be directly reached?

More shucks…I have been looking for your (Gladys) email and more on your profile.

I love the look and feel of this blog. I have a strong feeling you are “something else”. :)

Gladys, Congratulations on your first podcast! It was a pleasure to hear your voice. In my opinion, facilitators who are successful in f2f situations should be able to convey their leadership and enthusiasm in an online setting as well. Maybe this is because good leaders are flexible and willing to adapt themselves to new situations. That being said, I’m sure you’re as dynamic in the classroom as you have been at Learning with Computers!

    you said:
“do you believe online facilitation is quite different from f2f?”
YYYes I do believe it’s VERY different:
a). Communication is not only words in the real world.
b). No one actually speaks in whole, grammatically correct sentences in the real world. (I tried writing down the transcript of a series of presentations and found myself automatically – unconsciously – finishing off sentences which the NSs had left hanging).
c). How many times in the real world has one said to oneself “goodness, I shouldn’t have said that” …. as soon as you have time to think.
d). f2f you negotiate meaning “on line” …er… you see what I mean? (that metaphore’s eating it’s tail now)… and the idea doesn’t have to be all-your-own – so the other party is instantaneously co-producer and thus Druker’s “we” is NOT theoretical.
QED – This kind of fuzzy thinking goes down well in the flesh and blood classroom !!!
GREAT blog Gladys – It’s SO helpful with all the links and explanations.
    merci beaucoup

    Gladys,
    Very nice personal blog!!!
Your leadership online is more than obvious. I think that age turns people wiser. With your present experience I’m msure you could be successful leading face to face teams.
