Teaching writing, teaching life…

Having watched (click on the grey triangle over the image below to see the video):
Web 2.0 The Machine is Us/ing Us (4:31 mins)
by Digital Ethnography (a working group of Kansas State University students and faculty dedicated to exploring and extending the possibilities of digital ethnography, led by Professor Wesch) today,…
I wonder whether we writing teachers can keep denying that…

teaching unilinear writing, fixed in time
creates unilinear thinkers, unwilling to question
and mistrustful of lifelong learning”.

Dear Gladys,
Blogging is certainly one of the tools we have to let our students explore the world, become critical thinkers, and decide for their own paths in life. I truly believe in the potential we, as educators, have to guide our students into this lifelong learning process. The Web 2.0 has made our lives much easier in this sense. However, it’s not an easy task due to institutional constraints, tight schedules for a syllabus that we are to cover, etc…Even so, with all the structures hindering this mind openness,I am still a romantic, a dreamer who truly believe in the power of education and the future of our students. And I’m glad to be with all of you, the Blogging Team, sharing what we believe is the way…
Great that you put all of this together for later reference!
You rock, girl.
Beijos,
Carla
WOW! – that really is some video clip!
My recent incursion into the virtual world, thanks to B4B has made me dizzy! As the title to Bee and Aaron’s talk implied, we have to master the tool. And without the teachers (discretely called moderators) I would never have made it.
Great site
Congrats
Elizabeth A.
Gladys,
Nice to see you blogging again! Hope to be reading more regular postings.

Thanks Carla, Elizabeth and Doug for your comments (you know I’m the kind of blogger who really cares about WHO’s reading!
)
I’ve just come across this interesting post by Steve Poland for Tech Crunch on this same video, and thougth it’d be wise to link it to my blog entry too…
Interestingly, his response to the video has to do with the potential of AI and how futuristic movies such as “I, Robot” and “The Matrix” might indeed turn into reality one day, whereas to me the video talked of human beings and freedom, using “The Machine” as a tool… I guess my focus was on “The Machine is Us“, whereas to Steve the main focus was on “The Machine is Using Us”….
How many people has this professor Wesch taught with this video???
! Guess he’ll never really know… Oh, the power of Web 2.0…
Gladys
…talking about ‘I, Robot’ etc., I saw in a January edition of the “New Scientist” magazine, the founder of Wikipedia (Jimmy Wales) is quoted as saying:
“I read that one company is importing all of Wikipedia into its artificial intelligence projects. This means when the killer robots come, you’ll have me to thank. At least they’ll have a fine knowledge of Elizabethan poetry.”
I take that as a reminder that artificial intelligence is NOT intelligence at all, though it IS artificial.
Cheers
Elizabeth
